Presentation: Linked Data
Abstract: Linked Data is about using the Web to connect related data that wasn’t previously linked, or using the Web to lower the barriers to linking data currently linked using other methods. It is a method for exposing, sharing, and connecting pieces of data, information, and knowledge on the Semantic Web, also known as the Web of Data, using standard Web technologies such as HTTP, Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). The Semantic Web is all about making links between datasets understandable not only to humans but also to machines so that a person or machine can explore the web of data.
An Introduction to Linked Data and current research will be presented. Specifically, two prototypes being developed that demonstrate how linked data can be leveraged in an end-use interface and how to convert legacy data into Linked Data.
Key Words: Linked Data, Big Data, Semantic Web, Web 2.0, Web of Data, Cloud, HTTP, RDF, URI
Presenter: Jeff Mixter, Software Engineer, Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Research, Dublin, OH
Jeff Mixter works with Jean Godby (OCLC Research) and Kenning Arlitsch (Montana State University) on an IMLS funded grant project to improve the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of institutional repositories and digital collections. He holds Bachelor’s Degrees in History and German from The Ohio State University as well as Master’s Degrees in Library Information Science and Information Architecture/Knowledge Management from Kent State University.
