ComSoc: Twenty First Century Communications - Managing Communications During an Emergency

Start: 24 Jun 2008 - 5:00pm

End: 24 Jun 2008 - 7:30pm

Jim Kennedy conceived the technology behind Twenty First Century Communications during an electrical storm, sketching a basic diagram on a dinner napkin. Over the years that followed, he grew that system into an international business. Today, TFCC serves over 200 clients in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. TFCC has received national attention for supporting the response to major disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the San Diego wildfires. Kennedy will discuss the path of innovation that has charted the course of his career and the growth of his business.

Speaker Bio:
Jim Kennedy and partners founded Twenty First Century Communications (TFCC) in 1989, based on technology Kennedy developed to enable electric utilities to improve customer service and provide restoration information during power outages. In the late 1990s, Mr. Kennedy adapted TFCC’s technology to the needs of government and the private sector for outbound emergency notification.

Prior to TFCC, Jim held executive positions at the State of Ohio directing regulatory affairs including energy facility licensing and energy policy. Jim designed the computer model for estimating coal burn consumption during coal strikes that is still in use by the Ohio electric utility industry. He pioneered Ohio's regulatory initiative in monitoring gas and electric utility forecasting and his team supervised the development of the state energy policy and fuel allocation during the 1970's energy crisis.

Mr. Kennedy taught Economics for 12 years at the Ohio State University. He holds a BS in Economics and Computer Science from the College of Wooster and a Masters in Economics and an MBA from the Ohio State University. In 2003, Ernst and Young selected Mr. Kennedy as an Entrepreneur of the Year for the Central Ohio area.
